TOWSON, Md. – Coming off of one of the best seasons in program history, Towson University men's lacrosse coach
Shawn Nadelen has announced a quartet of Marylanders as captains for the 2017 season.
Redshirt senior
Brian Bolewicki will serve as a captain for a second straight season, while true seniors
Jack Adams and
Ryan Drenner will be captains for the first time. Sophomore
Zach Goodrich rounds out the quartet, becoming the first true sophomore captain in the Nadelen Era (2012).
"Having Jack, Brian, Ryan and Zach earn the distinguished honor of being elected captain by their peers provides great leadership for the 2017 team," said Nadelen, who begins his sixth year as the headman of the program. "Each one has great character, an unwavering work ethic and the respect of their teammates. They all embody what being a Towson lacrosse player is about. Brian and Jack are the most vocal of the group. Ryan is our leader on the offensive end and has been a great resource for the young players this past fall. Zach is the first sophomore we have had as a captain during my 13 years at Towson. He has certainly earned the respect of his teammates and continues to strengthen his voice within the team each day. These four captains, to go along with a strong senior class that has had a lot of experience and success on the field, will help us during the challenges of the 2017 season."
A two-time captain, Bolewicki has appeared in 45 career games, including all 19 contests last season in his return from a lower body injury. He has 25 points to his credit, scoring 15 goals along with 10 assists. He had a career-best 15 points in 2016, putting away nine goals with six helpers. A Cockeysville, Maryland native, Bolewicki has ripped off 72 shots during his time at Towson, putting 35 of those on goal.
Adams, one of the top defensive midfielders in the country, has played in 50 games for the Black & Gold. He saw time in all 19 games a year ago, anchoring the nation's top defensive unit, often drawing opponents' top midfielders, despite being a short stick defensive midfielder. Adams, who hails from Freeland, Maryland has snapped up 39 career groundballs, adding a career-best 15 during his junior season in 2015. Last season, Adams caused 12 opponent turnovers, a career-best. Adams also helped the Tigers become one of the best clearing teams in the country as Towson gained the offensive zone just under 90 percent of the time, best in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Adams earned USILA Third Team All-America honors last season, in addition to his First Team All-CAA plaudits.
A Westminster, Maryland product, Drenner led Towson's high-powered offense. He has 113 points to his credit, including a career-best 56 last season thanks to 33 goals and 23 assists. Drenner was one of the most efficient offensive players last year, scoring on 36.3 percent of his 91 shots. The attackman has three career game-winning goals, notching all three last season. Drenner was ranked 64
th in the country last season, averaging 2.95 points per game en route to USILA All-America honorable mention status. He was the CAA's Co-Player of the Year, while adding First Team All-CAA and CAA All-Academic honors to his laurels.
Another defensive midfielder, Goodrich is the first sophomore captain since Nadelen took over the reigns in 2012. The Stevensville, Marylander played in all 19 games in his rookie season and like Adams, helped anchor the country's best defensive unit. Goodrich scored four goals in transition as a true freshman, taking 13 shots. Two of his goals came in the postseason, striking against Drexel in the CAA Semifinals while adding a tally against Loyola in the NCAA Tournament. He grabbed 37 groundballs and went 50 percent at the faceoff X. He caused 10 turnovers on his way to CAA All-Rookie Team honors.
The Tigers open the 2017 season with a road game at Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 18. A game time has not been set for the intrastate clash.
