CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Towson University men's swimming and diving team set a pair of school records on day two of the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Towson is in third-place with 212.5 points through 16 events. William & Mary leads with 319.5 points, followed by Drexel (252).
Jack Saunderson set a school record (1:48.99) in the 200-yard individual medley, while
Matt Essing set a freshman record (20.55) in the 50-yard freestyle.
How it Happened
- Brandon Ress won silver in the 500-yard freestyle finals, timing 4:25.96. Aaron Magazine took eighth-place with a time of 4:36.53. In the 'B' finals, Evan Brophy tied for second (10th overall), timing 4:31.80. Matt Sieffert finished 12th (4:33.97).
- Jack Saunderson timed 1:49.20 to win bronze for the 200-yard individual medley. The sophomore set a school record in a swim-off during morning prelims with a time of 1:48.99. Noah Pritchard, the previous school record holder, finished sixth (1:51.01) followed by Nick Breschi in seventh-place (1:51.55). In the event's 'B' finals, Ben Johnston finished third (11th overall) with a time of 1:51.86.
- Nick Essing placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.34. His brother, Matt Essing, placed third in the event's 'B' finals (10th overall) with a time of 20.93. He had set a freshman record for the event in the morning prelims (20.78) before improving on that freshman record in a swim-off during prelims (20.55).
- Jake Casey placed seventh on the one-meter boards with a score of 205.15.
- In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Nick Essing, Matt Essing, Ben Johnston and Brandon Ress combined for a fifth-place time of 1:24.08.

The four-day meet continues tomorrow with morning prelims at 10 a.m. and evening finals at 4 p.m. The morning session will feature time trials for the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke.
