Gymnastics Sets Season-Best 194.950 at GW Quad Meet

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Towson University gymnastics team finished third at George Washington's quad meet on Sunday afternoon in the Charles E. Smith Center with a season-best 194.950. Tyra McKellar won the all-around for the Tigers, followed by Gabriella Yarussi in third-place. Towson posted five top-five finishes and 10 in the top 10.
 
The Tigers posted a season-best team score of 194.950 to place third. No. 16 George Washington won the meet with a score of 196.400. The University of New Hampshire placed second (196.075) and Ball State University in fourth-place (193.700).
 
Towson had gymnasts set six career-bests and record five season-bests at the quad meet. The Tigers had its best performance on the floor exercise, recording its second-highest team score of the season (49.050). Towson set a season-best team score of 48.775 on vault.
 
The Tigers, who were originally scheduled to compete at the University of North Carolina's quad meet on Friday, had their weekend plans altered after an emergency water problem caused UNC to cancel its meet.

How it Happened
  • Towson opened the meet on balance beam with a team score of 48.500. Gabriella Yarussi scored a 9.825 that tied for seventh-place while Tyra McKellar and Mary Elle Arduino had matching 9.800 scores (T-10th). 
  • The Tigers recorded two career-bests and a season-best on floor exercise, finishing with a team score of 49.050. That total is the Tigers' second highest of the season. Tyra McKellar set a season-best 9.875 on the event to tie as the runner-up. Gabriella Yarussi recorded a career-high 9.850 (T-fourth), followed by Erin Tucker with a career-high 9.825 (T-ninth).  
  • Towson shined on vault, scoring a season-best 48.775. Three Tigers had career-bests while three Tigers picked up season-bests. Erin Tucker led with a career-best 9.825 to tie for sixth-place, followed by Gabriella Yarussi with a career-best 9.775 (T-12th-place). Tyra McKellar recorded a season-best 9.750 (T-15th). Cortni Baker scored 9.725 (21st), a career-best. Bayleigh Fobes posted a season-best 9.700 (22nd) and Mary Elle Arduino had a season-best 9.675 (23rd).
  • The Tigers recorded a team score of 48.525 on the uneven bars to round out the meet. Tyra McKellar led the Tiger effort with a 9.825 that tied for third-place. Gabriella Yarussi recorded a career-best 9.750 (12th). Mary Elle Arduino made her season-debut on the event, matching Cortni Baker's score of 9.650 (T-14th). Noelle Harada also earned a 9.650 score.
  • Tyra McKellar and Gabriella Yarussi competed in the all-around. McKellar won the event with a season-best 39.250 while Yarussi recorded a career-best 39.200 to finish third.
 
Up Next
Towson returns home to welcome West Virginia and Temple to SECU Arena on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. for the annual Shelli Calloway Invitational. The meet will serve as the Tigers' Alumnae Day and fans who wear a Towson shirt can receive a special $5 ticket.
