TOWSON, Md. -- It is with heavy hearts that the Towson University men's lacrosse team, and the University as a whole, mourns the loss of men's lacrosse legend and former Tiger Dick Edell '67.

Edell, affectionately known as "Big Man" in the lacrosse world, died Wednesday morning of pneumonia at Howard County General Hospital at the age of 74.

"Coach Edell's legacy will live on for generations as he positively impacted so many young men," said Towson head coach Shawn Nadelen, who competed against Edell's Maryland teams while playing at Johns Hopkins. "These young men are carrying on the lessons learned and the love shared by Big Man onto their families and relationships, allowing his legacy to be endless. He was a wonderful person to all, with a genuineness like no other. We are grateful to be able to call Coach Edell a Towson Tiger!"

One of the most respected coaches in lacrosse history, Edell was inducted into the Towson Hall of Fame in 1980.

Edell is one of four former Tigers to be elected to the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. At the time of his induction, Edell ranked fifth among NCAA Division I coaches with 282 career victories and ranked second all-time with 17 NCAA Division I Tournament appearances.

After playing at Towson for coach Carl Runk, Edell served as head coach at the University of Baltimore (1973-76), Army (1977-83) and the University of Maryland (1984-2001).

A two-time USILA National Coach of the Year, Edell led the Terrapins to the NCAA Championship game in 1995, 1997, and 1998.

Edell has also been inducted into the US Lacrosse Potomac Chapter and University of Maryland Halls of Fame.

Prior to the Tigers' first practice in advance of the 2018 CAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Nadelen brought the team together at midfield of Garber Field to address the team and spoke to Edell's impact on not only the game of lacrosse, but his student-athletes and the lacrosse community as a whole. Echoing the outpouring of sentiments across the lacrosse world, Nadelen mentioned that Edell was not only a Hall of Fame coach and athlete, but a Hall of Fame person.

At 6-5, Edell lived up to his nickname of "Big Man", towering over many of his contemporary athletes in the mid-60s at Towson State. He was an honorable mention USILA All-American during his student-athlete career at Towson State.

Following his playing career at Towson, Edell went on to coach locally at Calvert Hall College High School, the University of Baltimore, the United States Military Academy before a long and storied career at the University of Maryland.
