Defense Leads Tigers to 35-20 Victory Over Saint Francis

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson defense held Saint Francis to just 197 yards of total offense in a 35-20 victory in the home opener Saturday evening at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.
 
How it Happened
  • The Tigers offense got on the board with an 18-play 86-yard drive on its opening possession.  Darius Victor capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.
  • The defense took over the rest of the first quarter, holding SFU to minus-three yards rushing and just 17 total yards.
  • Darius Victor scored his second touchdown of the game with a seven-yard run late in the second quarter.
  • Connor Frazier ran in from 11 yards out on the Tigers first possession of the second half.
  • The Tigers offense has scored on all four of his possessions to start a game or a half.
  • Donnell Lewis returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown.  It marked the first punt return for a touchdown since Derrick Joseph took a punt back 81 yards against Delaware State on September 13, 2014.
  • Brian Dowling caught his second touchdown in as many games as he caught a 20-yard pass from Frazier in the fourth quarter.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Frazier finished the day by going 16-of-23 for a career-best 269 yards and a touchdown.
  • Jacquille Veii had a big day by catching four passes for 115 yards.  He did most of his damage in the second half by catching two passes for 62 yards on consecutive plays.
  • Veii made a highlight reel catch in the third quarter by reaching around a defender and catching the pass with just one hand.
  • Redshirt Sophomore Clifton Jones had the best game of his career, recording 3.5 tackles-for-loss.  He added 1.5 sacks and finished with five total tackles.
  • As a team, the defense recorded 10 tackles-for-loss and five sacks.
  • Jordan Mynatt had a team-high seven tackles.  He added 1.5 sacks, two tackles-for-loss and two pass break-ups.

The Tigers play host to Holy Cross on Sept. 19.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.  The game is Military Appreciation game with all tickets being sold for $11.24, honoring the day Sgt. Major Wardell B. Turner was Killed in Action defending our freedom in Kabul.
