TOWSON, Md. – Towson University Head Football Coach
Rob Ambrose announced that redshirt sophomore
Morgan Mahalak has been named the starting quarterback for the 2016 season opener at South Florida.
Mahalak was locked in a tight battle with redshirt sophomore
Ellis Knudson and senior
Heath Dahlgren throughout fall camp.
"I am impressed with the work ethic of these young men," said Ambrose. "The fact that it took this long is a testament to their effort, focus and competitiveness. What I probably like best is that we have three high quality student-athletes at the quarterback position who are not only competitors, but friends. Knowing how they will work together week in and week out to make sure we are in the best position to win shows that they are great teammates."
Mahalak came to Towson after spending the previous two years at Oregon. He was rated the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback after going 160-for-260 for 2,795 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior at Marin Catholic High School. He also rushed for 575 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Tigers season opener is set for Sept. 3 at USF. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be carried on the American Sports Network and ESPN3.
