TOWSON, Md. – The 2016-17 school year provided Towson Tiger fans with plenty of exciting moments on the court, on the field, the course and in the pool. Moment nine takes fans to the gymnastics floor of SECU Arena.
In gymnastics, big performances lead to big numbers on the scoreboard.
On Feb. 24 against Rutgers, the Tigers got three huge performances from
Mary Elle Arduino,
Tyra McKellar and
Gabriella Yarussi. The trio all scored 9.900 or higher in their respective events.
Arduino matched her season-high with a 9.900 on the balance beam. It was the third time in her career that she has posted a 9.900 or better in that event.
McKellar posted a career-high 9.925 on the floor exercise.
She is the first gymnast to post a 9.925 on floor since
Aysia Sharif did so at the 2016 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. McKellar is one of 11 Tigers all-time who have recorded a 9.925 or higher on floor exercise. Only four Tigers in program history have scored higher than a 9.925.
Yarussi also contributed a stellar performance on the floor exercise. She finished with a career-high 9.900 in the event to finish second behind McKellar. Yarussi joins a select list of Tigers who have scored a 9.900 or higher on floor exercise. She is one of 13 Tigers in program history to have done so.
Arduino, McKellar and Yarussi's performances helped the Tigers post a season-best team score of 195.675 in the meet and defeat the Scarlet Knights. Towson's total of 195.675 was its highest score since recording a 196.525 at George Washington on March 22, 2015. It is the highest team total for the Tigers inside SECU Arena and ranks eighth on the program's all-time top team scores list.
