Saunderson capped an impressive 2016-17 season at the 2017 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships over the weekend. He finished 16th in the 200-yard butterfly finals (1:43.39) en route to earing Honorable Mention All-America honors.  During the event trials, Saunderson timed 1:41.84, a school record and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) all-time record, to finish 12th and qualify for the event finals. He also swam in the 100-yard butterfly trials, placing 43rd with a time of 47.29, just missing matching his school record of 47.01.
 
Saunderson was just the second member of the men's program to compete at an NCAA Championship meet. He is the first in program's history to qualify for an event finals and to receive All-America honors.
