Student-Athlete Expectations, Responsibilities, and Rules

The purpose of the study hall program is to provide an organized study opportunity for student-athletes who are in their first year of enrollment at Towson University. Our records continue to show that regular class attendance combined with regular study hall attendance increases student GPA's. Therefore, we expect students in study hall to do the following:

1.       Sign in by swiping your One Card through the magna swipe and begin studying by the assigned time.  (5:00 pm or 7:00 pm)

2.       Be sure to sign out by swiping your One Card through the magna swipe.  This will be no earlier than 7:00 pm or 9:00 pm.

3.       You must complete 6 hours of study hall per week.  You must complete a minimum of 2 hours during a study hall session.  If study hall goes well and there are no problems, you will be dismissed at the correct time.  However, if problems arise during the assigned time, you will stay until dismissed.

4.       If you have a competition during one of the nights of study hall you are assigned, you are still required to complete 6 hours by the Friday of that same week.  If there are any questions or concerns with this, contact the Study Hall Coordinator immediately.

5.       When leaving the room, be sure the monitor knows where you are going (room number, tutor, bathroom, etc.) and check in with the monitor when you return.

6.       Have all necessary materials with you to study for the full 2 hours.

7.       Tutors will be available from 5:00 ? 9:00 pm in designated areas and upon request (see the Tutorial Coordinator for appointment based tutor sessions).

8.       If you need to go to the computer lab or language lab; contact the Academic Services Intern or the Study Hall Coordinator no later than an hour prior to your assigned check-in time.

9.       Understand that in some cases you may need to speak to another student for a few moments, but keep these occurrences to a minimum.

10.   Talking and/or any other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

11.   Hold all interruptions (water, bathroom, etc.) to a minimum.

12.   No reading of newspapers, magazines, or the use of any materials not pertaining to class.  Cell phones are not permitted at any time.

13.   No eating of meals during study hall time, only light snacks.  Dispose of your trash properly.  If not, no food or drinks will be permitted in study hall.

14.   Laptops are to be used for schoolwork only; no checking personal email, downloading music, instant messaging, checking stats, etc.  If this situation becomes a problem, laptops will not be permitted.

15.   Realize that comments like, “I don't have anything to do!” are not an acceptable excuse for not doing work.

16.   Walkmans, CD players, etc. are permitted.  However, if it can be heard by anyone else, it is too loud.  If it becomes a problem, they will not be permitted.

Make courtesy a daily habit.
