Tiger Academic Student-Athlete Support Programs

Meetings with Assigned Sport Advisor

Individual meetings with student-athletes can assist with his/her organizational structure in which to operate as well as supervised study time. The students will be taught an overall organizational structure which includes:

·          Note taking

·          Time management

·          Proactive planning

·          Learning strategies

·          Test taking skills

·          Personal responsibility

Study Hall

The Study Hall program was designed to enhance the academic skills of the freshmen student-athlete to increase their chances of success in the classroom.  The study hall program, required of all freshmen student-athletes and first semester transfers, consists of six (6) hours per week in the first semester of enrollment.  (Hours could increase per coaches discretion.)  Each study session focuses on completing academic objectives.  When the student checks in with the monitor, he/she is to designate three objectives to accomplish during that time.  The monitor initially reviews the objectives and the objectives must be completed to receive credit at the end of the time.  A report is given at the end of the week to each counselor and it is the responsibility of each counselor to report that information to the coaches.

Tutorial Program

The tutorial program assists the student-athlete in conjunction with several tutorial programs across campus designed to provide academic support to Towson University students.  The goal of the tutorial program is to promote academic excellence, not merely to keep the student-athlete eligible.  There are two ways for a student-athlete to receive or be assigned a tutor: the counselor can assign tutors to work with students or there are tutors available by request during Study Hall time.  The tutorial coordinator completes all hiring, payroll and firing of tutors.  The tutors are trained by the Academic Achievement Center as well as the Tiger Academic Staff.

Laptop Loan Program

If a team is traveling during season, there are 7 laptops available for the coach to check out to take on trip for student-athletes.  See the assigned counselor for the paperwork and process of release of laptop.

Tiger Orientation along with TU CARES

The Tiger orientation during TU CARES, the Towson University's new student orientation program, is designed to inform the new, incoming student athlete.  Numerous topics are covered during this time, for example placement exams, registration for fall semester, university and specific college overviews, as well as NCAA and athletic department policies and procedures.

CLASS ATTENDANCE / ABSENCE POLICY

  1. Students are expected to attend all classes. Consistent attendance offers the most effective opportunity for students to understand concepts, materials and expectations of those courses in which they are enrolled. Although some courses do not use attendance as a criterion for grading, there are others where in-class participation is an integral part of the course. Examples include, but are not limited to, seminars and courses that require public speaking, laboratories, language learning, group discussions or student teaching. Frequent absences from these types of courses, whether excused or unexcused, may affect the final grade. Faculty who use absences as a factor in grading must explain in the course syllabus what effect even an excused absence might have on the evaluation of a student's work.
  2. It is policy of the university to excuse the absences of students for the following reasons:

·         illness or injury when the student is unable to attend class

·         religious observance where the nature of the observance prevents the student from attending class

·         participation in university activities at the request of university authorities (e.g., Intercollegiate Athletics, Forensics Team, Dance Company, etc.)

·          compelling verifiable circumstances beyond the control of the student.

Students requesting an excused absence must provide documentation to the instructor two weeks prior to the scheduled absence when known in advance or as soon as possible when not known in advance.

  1. Absences that do not fall into any of the categories outlined in item number two are unexcused. Faculty may set a limit on the number of unexcused absences.
  2. Students who are absent from class are responsible for any missed work, assignments, or assessments (e.g., quizzes, tests, papers, etc.). Faculty members are required to allow students with documented excused absences to make up missed work or assignments when this is feasible. When the nature of the assignment makes this impossible, faculty members should attempt to make a reasonable adjustment of the assignment. Students who will be representing TU at events, conferences, or other official activities should obtain a Notification of Absence from Class Form from the Office of Student Activities, University Union, room 217, to be given to their instructors to verify the excused absence. Students are encouraged to notify faculty of anticipated class absences as soon as they learn they will be missing class. Faculty should use their discretion regarding making up missed assignments and the ramifications of missing certain class periods.

Important! Students who fail to appear for the first two class sessions, or the first session of evening classes, may forfeit their spaces in class. Instructors have the right to release these spaces to other students wishing to add the class to their schedules.
