NEWARK, Del. ? Facing a BIG EAST opponent for the second straight week, the Tigers battled tough against St. John's at the University of Delaware Blue Hen Classic on Friday night. However, the Red Storm took advantage of their limited chances to edge the Tigers by a 1-0 margin at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Freshman forward Jen Leaverton scored the game's only goal in the 78th minute as the Red Storm won the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
“This was a competitive game, but I don't think we were dangerous enough up top,” said Towson Coach Greg Paynter. “St. John's is a good opponent and they played hard. It was a game that could have gone either way.
“We got a lot of contributions from our freshmen again tonight, which gives us added depth,” he added.
Leaverton scored the first goal of her career with 12:50 remaining in the second half, a 20-yard blast past freshman goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Russell made two saves to earn her second straight shutout as the Red Storm outshot Towson by a 4-2 margin.
Making her second straight start, senior goalkeeper Kendie Bauer made one save in the first half while Papciak made her college debut by playing the second half.
The Tigers will face Lafayette College on Sunday afternoon at the Blue Hen Classic at 12 p.m. while the Red Storm will play host Delaware at 2:30 p.m.
