Hamden, Conn. ? The Towson University volleyball team improved to 4-0 on the season with two more victories on day two of the Quinnipiac Invitational. The Tigers (4-0) posted a 3-0 victory over Morgan State in their first contest and wrapped up tournament action with a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac. The Tigers had two players named to the All-Tournament Team for the Quinnipiac Invitational. Senior Valerie Chromy earned All-Tournament honors while junior Alysha Fanning was named the tournament MVP.
It is the first time since the 2002 season, Towson has posted a 4-0 mark to start the season. In 2002, the Tigers were 9-0 to start the year.
“I thought we played really well in both matches today, said Coach Paul Koncir. In the Quinnipiac match, we need a nice job of every time they got a couple of points we would battle right back. The girls did a nice job of executing the game plan today.”
Against Morgan State, Towson took game one by a 25-11 score. The Tigers clinched the victory with 25-16 victories in games two and three. Towson hit .258 for the match after hitting .400 or better in each of the last two games. Sophomore Katee Luecke had a solid match recording 17 assists, two service aces and five block assists. Senior Ally Perko had eight digs and seven kills while Fanning posted six kills and hit .273 for the contest. Rhyan Shy led Morgan State with six kills while Delissa Carline had seven digs.
In the match with Quinnipiac, Towson recorded a game one victory by a score of 25-13. The Tigers clinched the victory after posting 25-16 victories in games two and three. Towson hit .391 for the match after hitting .400 or better in two of the three games. Luecke dished out 22 assists while recording two service aces and five digs. Perko recorded a match-high 11 kills and added six digs. Senior Maddie Haseltine just missed a “double-double” finishing with 10 kills and nine digs. Freshman Susan Gansor posted eight kills and two block solos while Fanning had five kills and hit .455 for the contest.
Towson returns to action on Friday, September 5 at the Dayton Flyer Invitational. The Tigers will take on Cleveland State at 4:30 p.m.
