Towson Goes 1-1 on Day Two of Tiger Invitational

TOWSON, Md. ? Led by All-Tournament selections Alysha Fanning and Valerie Chromy the Towson volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the Tiger Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (10-4) fell to North Dakota by a 3-0 score before rebounding to defeat Lehigh 3-0 in the nightcap.

North Dakota won the tournament title in a tiebreaker as the Fighting Sioux, Maryland and Towson all finished the two-day event with 2-1 records. Lehigh finished 0-3 in the tournament.

“I thought we just didn't have the fight we needed against North Dakota in the first match,” said Coach Paul Koncir. “I thought we did a nice job of coming out and playing our game and not worrying about Lehigh and just taking care of what we needed to and it paid off with the victory.”

Against North Dakota, Towson dropped a close set one by a 29-27 score. The Fighting Sioux took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win in set two. North Dakota clinched the match with a 25-21 win in set three. Sophomore Britney Loomis led the Tigers with 12 kills in the match while Fanning had 10 kills and hit .409. Sophomore Katee Luecke dished out 32 assists while junior Missy Rohrbaugh posted a team-high 14 digs. Senior Kristina Shannon had 11 digs in the match.

Megan Langseth had 41 assists for North Dakota while Lindsay Vortherms posted 20 digs.

In the match with Lehigh, Towson jumped out to an early lead and claimed the first set by a 25-9 score. The Tigers took the second set by a 25-15 score and clinched the match with a 25-12 victory in set three.  Fanning hit .714 with six kills in the match while senior Maddie Haseltine had nine kills and six digs. Luecke had 22 assists while freshman Susan Gansor finished with six kills and six block assists.

Lehigh was led by Jessica Kudirka with 17 assists and Brittany Thurston with 10 digs.

Fanning and Chromy were joined on the all-tournament team by North Dakota's Britta Hanson, the tournament MVP. Hanson's teammates Devin Trefz and Vortherms were also selected. Maryland's selections included Katie Usher and Sharon Strizak while Lehigh's Chelsea Sheridan was selected.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, September 23 when they host Loyola College. The Charles St. show down begins at 7 p.m.
