Tigers Fall at UNC Wilmington, 3-1

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Tigers entered their game against UNC Wilmington on Friday night hoping that a change of scenery might help them get a victory. However, the host Seahawks (8-5-0, 4-1-0) were not very hospitable and jumped out to a three-goal lead en route to a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Towson (5-8-1, 1-4-0) at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.

The Seahawks scored three second-half goals to defeat the Tigers for the eighth time in nine all-time meetings.

After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute when junior Megan Novak scored her third goal of the season off an assist by heading a free kick by freshman defender Lindsay Henry into the goal.

Less than 13 minutes later, the Seahawks upped the advantage to 2-0 when freshman Stephanie Rose converted a crossing pass from senior forward Erica Rodgers for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

With 10:38 remaining, sophomore forward Kelly Dodd extended the UNC Wilmington cushion to 3-0 when she scored her first goal of the season on a rebound past sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak.

Sophomore forward Kaysi Ward narrowed the Tiger deficit to 3-1 with 4:31 remaining when she scored her first goal of the season off a rebound of her own shot. However, the Tigers were unable to get any closer as the Seahawks secured their fourth consecutive victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter made three saves in the victory for the Seahawks, who held a slim 8-7 advantage in shots.

Papciak made three saves for the Tigers, who dropped their fourth straight game.

The Tigers will travel to Georgia State on Sunday afternoon to face the Panthers. Meanwhile, the Seahawks will continue their four-game homestand against George Mason on Sunday afternoon.
