Northeastern Defeats Tigers in CAA Clash, 2-0

TOWSON, Md. – Facing one of the top defensive teams in the CAA, the Tigers had numerous scoring opportunities against defending CAA champion Northeastern on Friday. However, the Huskies (7-2-1, 2-0-1) held strong and held Towson (5-6-1, 1-2-0) without a goal in a 2-0 decision at the Towson Center Soccer Complex.

Freshman forward Devin Petta scored two goals as the Huskies improved to 3-1-1 in the last five matches. It was Northeastern's second straight win over the Tigers.

“When you play against explosive forwards like Northeastern has and give them chances, they are going to bury them,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “We put ourselves in plenty of opportunities offensively today and weren't able to convert. It just wasn't our day to score goals.”

Less than two minutes into the first half, Petta gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead when she scored on a 20-yard shot from the top of the penalty area into the top left corner of the goal.

The Huskies held the one-goal lead until the 85th minute when Petta received a long outlet pass from freshman defender Sandra Magnusdottir on a breakaway and scored past sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak.

Led by sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon, the Northeastern defense held off the Tigers, who outshot the Huskies by a 22-13 margin. The CAA leader in save percentage, Gordon made six saves to post her fifth shutout of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Kristen Sample made three saves before leaving in the 64th minute with an injury. Papciak made one save in the final 26 minutes.

The Tigers will host Hofstra University on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Huskies will travel to George Mason for a 2 p.m. game against the Patriots.
