WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Tigers were hoping to play the role of spoiler on Sunday afternoon in their Colonial Athletic Association game against William & Mary and battled the Tribe to a scoreless draw in the first half. However, the Tribe scored twice after the intermission to keep their CAA Tournament hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Towson at Albert-Daly Field.
The loss dropped the Tigers' record to 7-10-2 overall and 3-6-1 in the CAA while snapping their three-game unbeaten streak. Meanwhile, William & Mary improves to 11-7-0 overall and 5-5-0 in the CAA with the victory.
Less than four minutes into the second half, the Tribe took a 1-0 lead when freshman Cortlyn Bristol scored an unassisted goal past sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak.
The Tribe held on to the one-goal advantage until the 81st minute when Bristol sent a through ball from 17 yards away to junior midfielder Brittany Lane, who scored her second goal of the season to the near post.
Meanwhile, the Tribe defense protected the lead by holding the Tigers to just eight shots, including one in the first half.
While Papciak made five saves for the Tigers, senior Jackie Bowman and junior Grace Barnard split the goalkeeping duties in the win for William & Mary. Bowman started and was replaced in the second minute by Barnard, who made six saves.
The Tigers will finish the season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to George Mason for a 4 p.m. match-up against the Patriots. Meanwhile, William & Mary will visit Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
