CAA-Leading Hofstra Defeats Tigers, 3-0

TOWSON, Md. – The Tigers entered Sunday's Colonial Athletic Association game against Hofstra (7-3-1, 4-0-0) hoping to hand the CAA-leading Pride their first conference loss of the season. However, the Pride used an early goal to start each half to post their third consecutive shutout win with a 3-0 victory over Towson (5-7-1, 1-3-0) at the Towson Center Soccer Complex.

Junior forward Salma Tarik recorded the first multi-goal game of her college career with two goals as the Pride extended their unbeaten streak to six straight games.

“We played hard and while we came up on the short end of the scoreboard, we were able to apply some pressure,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “Hofstra got an early goal in each half and that really took the wind of our sails. We are going to stay positive and continue to work hard and play good soccer.”

The Pride took a quick 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Tarik scored off assists from junior midfielder Tiffany Yovino and senior Diane Caldwell.

Just over three minutes into the second half, junior Kayla Pifer upped the Hofstra advantage to 2-0 after taking an open shot in the middle of the field past sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak.

Tarik extended the Pride lead with 38:35 remaining when she scored her sixth goal of the season off a crossing pass from sophomore forward Laura Greene.

Junior goalkeeper Krysten Farriella made seven saves to earn her second shutout of the season as the Pride outshot Towson by a 20-14 margin.

Papciak made five saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who dropped their third straight game.

The Tigers will travel to UNC Wilmington on Friday night for a 7 p.m. game against the Seahawks. Meanwhile, the Pride will host Old Dominion next Friday night at 7 p.m.
