TOWSON, Md. - The Tigers dropped a pair of matches on day two of the Towson Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers (7-7) fell 3-0 to Ball State before dropping a tough 3-2 decision to George Washington in the nightcap.
"We had a tough weekend but this group is driven and wants to improve following these losses," said Coach Paul Koncir. "I thought our intensity level against Penn and George Washington was pretty good and we need to build on that heading into what will surely be a tough Colonial Athletic Association schedule."
Against Ball State, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with a 25-17 win in the first set. Ball State extended its lead with a 25-11 win in the second set. Ball State clinched the match with a 25-18 win in the third set.
Amanda Halls led the Tigers with seven kills against the Cardinals and added six digs. Katee Luecke finished with 14 assists and six digs while Missy Rohrbaugh added six digs.
The Cardinals were led by Alisha Green with 13 kills and Brittany McGinnis who contributed 35 assists and nine digs.
Against George Washington, the Tigers founded themselves in an early hole as the visitors won the first set 25-18. Towson evened the match with a 25-20 win in the second set. The Tigers took their first lead of the match with a 25-22 win in the third set. George Washington forced a fifth set after claiming a 25-18 win in the fourth set. The Colonials took the match with a 15-8 win in the fifth set.
Alyssa Valentine, who was named the MVP of the tournament finished with 55 assists, five digs and five blocks for the Colonials. Leah Hill and Katie Butz posted 17 kills apiece while Candace Silva-Martin contributed 35 digs.
Britney Loomis led the Tigers with 13 kills and three digs while Halls added 13 digs and seven kills. Evan Schulz had 22 assists while Luecke chipped in with 20 helpers. Stacey Niehoff posted a team-high 17 digs in the match.
Valentine was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Butz and Lauren Whyte, Loomis from Towson, Charde Phillips from Ball State along with Lauren Martin and Madison Wojciechowski from Penn.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, September 26 when Colonial Athletic Association play begins. Towson will host James Madison at 7 p.m.
