BALTIMORE, Md. - Despite getting 18 assists and 16 digs from Evan Schulz, the Tigers dropped a 3-1 decision at UMBC on Tuesday evening. The Tigers (8-9) dropped their second straight decision as they wrapped up their non-conference play for the season.
"We need to find a way to maintain the consistency throughout the whole match," said Coach Paul Koncir. "I thought at times we looked really sharp but we couldn't maintain it."
"Getting Kelsey Hoefer back tonight gave us a big lift and I thought for having five freshmen on the floor at times during the match, the team really responded and played well," added Koncir.
UMBC jumped out to an early lead in the contest as the Retrievers earned a 25-21 win in the first set. The Tigers responded with a 25-21 win of their own to even the match at one set apiece. UMBC grabbed a 25-22 win in the third set to take the 2-1 lead in the match. The Retrievers clinched the contest with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
Schulz led the Tigers with her "double-double" while Hoefer posted 11 kills and hit .296 in her first appearance after battling back from an early season injury. Britney Loomis led the Tigers with a team-high 13 kills and added 11 digs. Katee Luecke had 11 assists in the contest. Amanda Halls and Missy Rohrbaugh each recorded 12 digs in the match while Halls added eight kills.
UMBC was led by Alyssa Lang who finished with 22 kills and 13 digs. Kira Giles finished with 42 assists and eight digs while Pam Jarrett had 16 digs.
Both teams played a strong contest at the net. Towson finished with 11 blocks while UMBC had 9.5 in the match. The Tigers were led by I'ishah Keliikoa who had five while the Retrievers had three players with four blocks apiece.
Towson returns to action on Friday, October 2 when it hosts Delaware at 7 p.m. in a Colonial Athletic Association contest. The Tigers will also use Friday's game as a chance to raise awareness about breast cancer.
