VCU Defeats Tigers, 3-0

TOWSON, Md. - Virginia Commonwealth hit .302 en route to a 3-0 win over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play. Kelsey Hoefer hit .429 with eight kills to lead Towson (12-10, 0-5 CAA) in the match.

"We are struggling right now and couldn't take advantage of our opportunities today," said Coach Bruce Atkinson.

A kill by Courtney Hott early in the first set gave VCU the 8-3 lead. The two teams would continue to battle with a kill by Britney Loomis pulling the Tigers to within three at 17-14. A kill by Jasmine Walters made it 21-19 in favor of the Rams. Katy Buck recorded a kill to make it 21-20 before VCU got the final four points it needed to take the first set, 25-22.

The second set proved to be the toughest of the three. The two teams battled through six ties and three lead changes. VCU led 22-19 before the Tigers battled back and behind a service ace from Stacey Niehoff tied the match at 24-24. The Rams got back-to-back kills from Mariel Frey to take the set, 26-24. VCU hit .407 in the third set and held the Tigers to just 11 kills to win 25-16 and take the match.

Buck finished with 10 kills and seven digs for the Tigers while Evan Schulz contributed 22 assists and two block assists. Lauren Tonokawa led all players with 11 digs and Desiree Agader came off the bench to chip in 14 assists. Loomis added nine kills to the Tigers' cause.

Frey finished with 11 kills, two service aces, six digs and four block assists to lead VCU. Marisa Low contributed 10 digs while Ciara Brown posted 20 assists and four digs.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, October 15 when they host Delaware in the Towson Center at 7 p.m.
