UNC Wilmington Earns OT Win Over Tigers

TOWSON, Md. – Junior midfielder Meagan Simeone scored the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in the first overtime period as UNC Wilmington (9-7-0, 6-2-0) earned its sixth win in the last eight games with a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers (6-8-3, 2-5-1) at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Seahawks moved into a tie for second place in the CAA standings with James Madison and improved their chances of securing a berth in the CAA Tournament.

After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when sophomore forward Stephanie Rose scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season on a shot from the top of the penalty area.

But, the Seahawks' lead was short lived as the Tigers tied the game less than three minutes later when senior defender Melissa Gomes scored her team-high fifth goal of the year after passes from sophomores Cree Julian and Cheyenne Skidmore.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the final minutes of regulation. Junior midfielder Courtney McKee had an opportunity in the 84th minute but her shot from 15 yards away was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter.

Then, Simeone had a chance in the 86th minute on a free kick. After her initial shot was blocked by a Tiger defender, sophomore defender Lindsay Henry took the rebound and fired a shot that was stopped by junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak to send the game into overtime.

In the final minute of the overtime period, the Tigers were called for a foul to give UNC Wilmington a free kick from near midfield. Henry sent the kick into the penalty area where Simeone headed the ball past Papciak to give the Seahawks the victory.

Hunter tallied six saves for the Seahawks, who were outshot by an 18-14 margin. Meanwhile, Papciak made six saves for the Tigers, who lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Tigers will take their final road trip of the season next weekend with a pair of games against Drexel and Delaware. Meanwhile, the Seahawks will continue their five-game road trip at Northeastern on Friday evening.
