CAA-Leading Hofstra Defeats Tigers, 4-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Senior Salma Tarik scored two goals and added an assist as Hofstra University (11-1-0, 5-0-0) won its 11th straight game, a 4-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers (5-6-3, 1-3-1) at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.

The win allowed the Pride to set a school record with their 11th straight win. In addition, the Pride tied a school record for the longest unbeaten streak in school history.

The Pride took a quick 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when junior midfielder Brittany Butts scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Tarik.

With 6:43 remaining in the first half, Tarik upped the Pride advantage to 2-0 when she scored on a long shot from 25 yards out for her sixth goal of the season.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Hofstra extended the cushion to 3-0 as senior midfielder Tiffany Yovino scored her third goal of the season from inside the goal area off assists from junior midfielder Courtney Breen and senior forward Kayla Pifer.

But, the Tigers responded in the 65th minute when senior defender Melissa Gomes tallied her fourth goal of the season with a penalty kick attempt past freshman goalkeeper Emily Morphitis.

However, the Pride regained the three-goal advantage in the 73rd minute when Tarik scored her second goal of the game by converting a pass from freshman Amber Stobbs and firing a shot into the upper left corner.

Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made eight saves in a losing effort for the Tigers, who were outshot by an 18-4 margin. The Pride also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tigers will finish their three-game road trip on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Northeastern for a 1 p.m. game against the Huskies.
