VCU Rallies for 3-2 Win Over Tigers

RICHMOND, Va. - Despite a career-high 16 kills from Alysha McCreary, the Tigers fell by a 3-2 score at Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday evening.

Despite four kills apiece from McCreary and Shelynne Hoyt in the first set, VCU was able to claim a 25-22 win in the set. Kristin Boyd had three kills to lead the Rams to the early lead. McCreary had five kills and two blocks in the second set to help the Tigers to a 25-23 win in the second set and even the match at 1-1.

The Tiger hit .407 in the third set and got five kills apiece from Amanda Halls and Katy Buck. Susan Gansor and McCreary added two kills apiece as the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-13 victory. VCU hit .290 in the fourth set and battled through nine ties to claim a 25-20 set win and force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, VCU jumped out to a quick 10-3 advantage and held the Tigers to a -.136 hitting percentage. VCU took the fifth set by a 15-5 margin and won the match.

McCreary added seven blocks and hit .519 in the match to lead the Tigers. Halls had her second straight "double-double" and tenth of the season. She finished with 12 kills and 20 digs while Buck added 16 kills and six digs. Evan Schulz contributed 41 assists and nine digs while Lauren Tonokawa had 22 digs.

Boyd finished with 18 kills for the Rams while Ciara Brown had 31 assists and 14 digs in the contest. Mariel Frey contributed 10 kills, 13 digs and six blocks.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, November 13 when they host Georgia State at 7 p.m.
