98 Student Athletes Recognized at the 8th Annual Outback Steakhouse Scholar Athlete DInner

Director of Athletics Mike Hermann and University Provost Dr. Marcia Welch recognized 98 Tiger student-athletes at the 8th Annual Outback Steakhouse Athletics Scholars Dinner.   Created by former PAWS (Proud Athletes Who Serve) Representatives and supported by the generousity of the Hunt Vally Outback Steakhouse and their manager Craig Saathoff, the dinner recognizes students who excel in both athletics and academics, as well as members of our faculty and staff who inspired and supported the student-athletes. In addition to remarks from Hermann and Welsh, guests also heard remarks from the 2009 Tiger Athletic Fund Scholar Athlete of the Year Brittany Woodfield '09.

Woodfield, a four-year starter for the women's lacrosse team, is currently enrolled in the Nursing Program at John's Hopkins University.  She had an outstanding career both on and off the field at Towson.  A two-time All-CAA 2nd Team member, she was the Tigers 3rd leading scorer during her senior year and finished her career with 99 goals and 42 assists.  Off the field, Woodfield served on PAWS for three years, including being President during her senior year. She participated in the NCAA Leadership Confernece, was named to the Dean's List, was awarded the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award all four years and received the Towson University Scholar-Athlete recognition.

To earn recognition, student athletes, cheerleaders and trainers must maintain a 3.5 or above cum or average GPA over the last two semesters (spring 2009 and fall 2009).  Those being recognized were also given the opportunity to invite a faculty or staff member who inspired them during the past year.

The dinner also awarded the Towson University Tiger Athletics Scholar Medallion to 23 student athletes, cheerleaders and trainers who will be graduating and/or have exhausted their eligibility this spring and have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.  Recipients are able to wear their medallion at graduation and will also be recognized in the commencement program and with a notation next to their name.
