HAMPTON, Va. - The Tigers used a pair of victories on Saturday to capture the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament Championship. Towson (4-0) earned a 3-1 win over Bryant in its first match before posting a 3-0 victory over host, Hampton. Katy Buck was named the Co-MVP of the tournament while Susan Gansor earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
"We started a little slow against Bryant but really played our best volleyball so far at the end of that match," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "The team was able to clean up some of the mistakes we made on the first day and hopefully we can build on this and go from here."
Towson found itself down early against the Bulldogs as Bryant earned a 25-23 win in set one. The Tigers bounced back with 25-16, 25-9 and 25-14 set wins to capture the match. The Tigers took advantage of 12 service aces in the match.
Buck and Amanda Halls posted "double-doubles" in the match to lead the Tigers. Halls finished with 13 kills and a career-high 22 digs. Buck added 10 kills, 15 digs and six service aces in the contest. Evan Schulz just missed a "double-double" as she matched her career-high with 34 assists and added nine digs. Lauren Tonokawa finished with 14 digs while Gansor contributed nine kills and a team-high five blocks. Mariah Burgess led Bryant with eight kills.
Towson posted the three set win over Hampton to finish off its weekend action. The Tigers won the first two sets by 25-12 and 25-11 scores. Towson secured the victory with a 25-20 win in the third set. The Tigers hit .310 in the first set to jump out to an early lead.
Buck led the Tigers with eight kills and 11 digs while Halls contributed six kills and 10 digs. Schulz posted 22 assists and eight digs while Tonokawa had 14 digs for the second straight match. Lihi Elkayam posted 18 assists and eight digs to lead Hampton.
The Tigers put their four-match win streak on the line when they host Georgetown on Tuesday, August 31 at 7 p.m.
