TOWSON, Md. - Behind "double-doubles" from Katy Buck and Evan Schulz, the Tigers posted a 3-1 win over Georgetown on Tuesday night in the Towson Center. Towson (5-0) matches the 2008 team for the second best start in school history with the victory.
"I thought we really came out strong and started well tonight," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "I thought we got some good contributions from a number of people. Kelsey Hoefer and Susan Gansor gave us a big lift at the end of the match with their blocks."
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead with a 10-5 run to start the first set and claimed a 25-19 win. The two teams battled early in the second set as Towson held just an 8-7 lead at one point. The Tigers would bounce back to claim the 25-23 win. Georgetown made a line-up change for the third set and Kortney Robinson gave the Hoyas a lift. Georgetown took the third set 25-23 despite a late comeback from the Tigers. Towson would hold off Georgetown 25-23 in the fourth set to claim the match victory.
Buck posted her second "double-double" of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs. Schulz's "double-double" was her first of the year and fourth of her career. She finished with a career-high 39 assists and 14 digs. Hoefer added 12 kills and four blocks for the Tigers. Lauren Tonokawa was the third Tiger to reach double digit digs as she posted 15. Gansor contributed seven kills and eight blocks.
Ashley Malone led Georgetown with 23 assists and eight digs while Tory Rezin added 16 digs.
The Tigers return to the court when they compete in the Battle of Baltimore Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Towson, which captured the inaugural Battle of Baltimore title, will face Coppin State and Morgan State on Friday at UMBC. The Tigers then battle UMBC and Loyola on Saturday at Morgan State.
