Tigers Fall to Brown, 3-1

TOWSON, Md. - Despite "double-doubles" from Evan Schulz and Katy Buck, the Tigers fell to Brown 3-1 on Friday night as part of the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. Towson (10-2) placed four players in double figures for digs in the match.

"I thought Shelynne Hoyt did a nice job for us offensively," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "We have things we definitely need to work on to give us a chance to win matches like this."

The Tigers started the match hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the first set. Hoyt had three big kills for the Tigers while Buck was serving for the Tigers. Back-to-back kills by Hoyt later in the set gave the home team a 14-7 lead. Towson extended its lead in the first set to 24-16 before claiming the 25-17 set victory. Brown hit .355 with 11 kills in the second set to earn a 25-19 set victory and tie the match at 1-1.

Alexandra Rieckhoff had 11 assists in the third set to help the Brown to a 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Tigers tried to force a fifth set with a hard fought battle in the fourth set. Towson forced 10 ties and four lead changes in the fourth set alone. Susan Gansor had five kills and three blocks in the fourth set but Towson hit just .021to Brown's .067 and fell 26-24.

Buck's "double-double" was her third of the season. She finished with 11 kills, 14 digs and two service aces. Schulz's "double-double" was her second of the season for the Tigers. She contributed a career-high 43 assists and 10 digs. Hoyt tied her career-high with 15 digs while hitting .394 in the contest. Kelsey Hoefer was the third Tiger to record double digit kills, finishing with 10. Lauren Tonokawa posted a season-high 19 digs while Stacey Niehoff had a season-high 13 digs.

Katrina Post finished with a "double-double" to lead Brown. She had 12 kills and 10 digs while Annika Gliottone posted a match-high 23 digs. Thea Derrough had 10 kills and six blocks while Rieckhoff finished with 39 assists.

Towson wraps up play in the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament when it faces Ohio State on Saturday, September 11 at 7 p.m. on UMBC's campus.
