WASHINGTON, D.C. - American hit .279 with seven service aces en route to a 3-0 victory over the Tigers on Friday afternoon as part of the Marriott Cavalier Classic/American University Tournament. Towson (10-4) got seven kills and three service aces from Katy Buck.
"I thought we struggled with our service game and receptions today," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "We are going to need to work on turning that around quick if we are going to get back on track."
The Eagles opened the first set on a 9-4 run and extended that to a 17-12 advantage. American would eventually take the first set by a 25-19 margin. The second set was the most tightly contested action of the match. There were 11 ties and six lead changes before American posted a 25-20 win and the 2-0 lead in the match. Katerina Cinkova had five kills in the third set to lead the Eagles to a 25-18 win and the match.
Buck was one of three Tigers to post seven kills in the match. She added three digs in addition to her kills and aces. Shelynne Hoyt had seven kills, hit .667 and added two blocks. Susan Gansor contributed seven kills and five blocks in the match. Evan Schulz had 27 assists while Rachel Gambow posted eight digs.
Cinkova led American with 12 kills and six blocks while Angelina Waterman added 11 kills for American.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday for day two of the Marriott Cavalier Classic/American University Tournament. Towson will face Stony Brook at 11 a.m. and Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. Both matches will be held on the campus of the University of Virginia.
