Tigers Edge Monmouth in Double Overtime, 1-0

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Sophomore forward Cheyenne Skidmore scored the game's only goal with 5:05 remaining in the second overtime period as the Tigers (4-3-2) earned a 1-0 non-conference victory over Monmouth University (4-3-0) at the Villanova Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers, who have played all nine of their games on the road this season, earned their second win in the last three games with the victory.

“Monmouth is a good team and is receiving votes in the national poll,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “Any time you can play a quality opponent like Monmouth and come away with a win, it's a good thing for our confidence, especially since we are heading into our conference schedule.

“It was a battle in the first half and neither team had much control,” Coach Paynter added. “In the second half, things opened up a bit. We were able to play good defense and had some good chances. Then, we took over in the overtime and were able to get a win.”

Skidmore, who scored her second goal of the season, took a cross from freshman forward Emily Banes and scored past senior goalkeeper Lia Fierro for the game-winning goal.

Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made six saves, including five in the second half, to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Fierro recorded four saves for the Hawks, who dropped their third straight game after a 4-0 start.

The Tigers will open their home schedule on Friday afternoon when they host the College of William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at the Towson Center Soccer Complex at 4 p.m. Meanwhile, the Hawks will host Lafayette on Friday afternoon.
