FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Alysha McCreary tied her career-high with 16 kills to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over George Mason on Friday evening. The Tigers (22-8, 9-4 CAA) have now won two straight and six of their last seven matches.
In the first set, a service ace by junior Aubrey Kirven allowed the visitors to open up a 9-4 lead. Towson extended its lead to 20-10 behind a kill from senior Susan Gansor. Towson took the first set from the Patriots (7-18, 2-11 CAA), 25-19. In the second set tied at 9-9, the Tigers used a five-point run capped by a service ace from freshman Paige Sekerak to open up a 14-9 lead. Back-to-back kills from Gansor allowed the Tigers to extend their advantage to 21-14. Towson took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 win in the second set.
George Mason held the Tigers to a .059 hitting percentage in the third set and used a 25-16 win to force a fourth set. In the fourth set, the Tigers opened up a 15-7 lead behind a kill from McCreary. Another kill from McCreary extended the Tiger advantage to 18-8. A kill from McCreary gave the Tigers a 25-15 win and the 3-1 victory in the match.
McCreary hit .367 and added five digs and three blocks to go along with her kills. Sophomore Katy Buck finished with 11 kills and six digs while Kirven had 47 assists and four digs. Sekerak posted a match-high 16 digs while junior Karolina Sawaniewicz and sophomore I'ishah Keliikoa had eight kills apiece.
Noelle Fanella led all players with 18 kills and added six digs. Lauren Goodell contributed 47 assists and five digs.
The Tigers, who are currently third in the CAA standings, wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12 at James Madison. Match time in Harrisonburg is set for 7:30 p.m.
