Strong Finish Lifts Tigers Past Howard, 3-0

TOWSON, Md. - A strong finish led the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Howard on Tuesday evening in the Towson Center. The Tigers (13-4) had six players record five or more kills in the match led by juniors Alysha McCreary and Karolina Sawaniewicz with nine each.

"I thought we were a little up and down tonight," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "We started a little slow but I was glad to see our girls never thought the first set was lost and kept battling."

The two teams battled hard in the first set with nine ties and five lead changes. Howard (1-14) held a 20-18 lead late in the set following a Tiger error. Towson would battle back to tie the set at 26-26. Late kills from sophomore Dayane Van Ass and junior Aubrey Kirven secured the set victory for the Tigers. In the second set, Towson hit .400 to Howard's -.040 and secured the 25-12 set victory. Towson got 12 assists from sophomore Bibiany Fonseca in the third set to secure the 25-15 victory and the win in the match.

McCreary, who missed the early part of the season due to injury, finished with nine kills, five service aces and three digs. Sawaniewicz had nine kills, hit .727 and added four digs for the Tigers. Kirven ran the offense in the first two sets and finished with 24 assists, six kills and three digs while sophomore Katy Buck had eight kills and a match-high nine digs.

Tosin Elebute led all players with 12 kills in the match and added six digs for the Bison. Jasmine King finished with 10 assists while Riana Cain added eight digs.

Towson is back on the court on Friday, Sept. 23 when Colonial Athletic Association play begins. The Tigers will host defending CAA Champion Delaware in the Towson Center at 7 p.m.
