TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University volleyball team extended its win streak to eight straight matches with a 3-0 victory over Morgan State on Tuesday evening. The Tigers (9-1) got a season-high 20 assists and six digs from Bibiany Fonseca in the contest.
"I thought we played well tonight and hit very well in the last set," said Coach Bruce Atkinson. "It was great to be able to get some different people time tonight and see them succeed as well."
The Tigers opened the first set on a 6-1 run and extended their advantage to 16-6 behind four straight kills from Marta Machos. Towson took advantage of a couple Morgan State errors and won the first set, 25-12. The second set saw the Tigers again take an early lead as a Katy Buck kill put the home team up 10-3. A kill from Dayane Van Ass extended Towson's lead to 20-10 as the Tigers would go on to take the second set 25-14. The third set was close early on as the two squads were tied at 10-10. The Tigers would rally and use a 15-3 run to earn a 25-13 win in the set. That run included seven straight points on the service game of Evan Schulz.
The Tigers hit .447 to Morgan State's .029 in the match.
Buck hit .417 with a season-high 20 kills and added six digs. Fonseca ran the Tigers' offense for the final two sets and contributed 20 assists, six digs, two service aces and two block assists. Aubrey Kirven had 14 assists and three digs in the first set. Paige Sekerak led all players with 11 digs while Susan Gansor had eight kills.
Natalie Chafeh led Morgan State with 13 assists while Erin Cox had six digs.
The Tigers have not dropped a set since the second set of their match against West Virginia on August 28th. Towson looks to extend its win streak on Friday, September 9 when it travels to Texas A&M Corpus Christi for the first match of the Corpus Christi Islanders Classic.
