CHARLESTON, S.C.The Towson men's basketball team outscored the College of Charleston by nine in the second half, but a slow start doomed the Tigers as they fell to the Cougars, 75-58, in the season opener for both teams Friday night at TD Arena.

Junior Jerrelle Benimon led all scorers with 23 points in his Towson debut. Graduate student Bilal Dixon was also impressive in his first game as a Tiger, posting a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Charleston (1-0) was led by junior Trent Wiedman's 17 points. Senior Andrew Lawrence and junior Anthony Thomas also turned in double figures with 16 and 12 respectively.

Towson (0-1), starting four newcomers this season, got off to an extremely slow start as the Tigers shot just 23.1 percent from the floor in the opening half. Meanwhile, Charleston was firing on all cylinders from the opening tip. The Cougars shot 60.0 percent from the field in the opening stanza and led 40-14 at the half.

Charleston increased its lead to 33 points less than four minutes into the second half, but Towson did not go away. Benimon scored five consecutive points and Dixon hit a jumper from the left wing to cap a 7-0 Tiger run with 15 minutes still to play.

Trailing 71-48 later in the half, sophomore Kris Walden ignited an 8-0 Towson spurt by scoring five of his 10 points during the run. Playing in his first game off the bench, Walden shot 3-for-5 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and no turnovers in 19 minutes.

A Jerome Hairston lay-in cut the Charleston lead to 15 late in the second half, but the Tigers would get no closer. Hairston registered six points and dished out a team-high four assists in the freshman's first game in a Tiger uniform.

Charleston shot over 50 percent in both halves and 56.3 percent for the game.

The Tigers return to the Towson Center on Monday to play in their exhibition finale against Goldey-Beacom College. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
