Delaware Spoils @Towson_WSOC CAA Opener, 1-0

Newark, Del. - The Towson University women's soccer team applied pressure from the start, but Delaware (4-4, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)) defeated the Tigers (0-8-1, 0-1 CAA), 1-0, Friday evening at Delaware Mini Stadium.

The Tigers fired off five shots and drew a corner kick in the first 20 minutes while limiting the Blue Hens to two shots in the same span. Delaware went on the offensive in the second part of the first half, and the two teams went into halftime scoreless.

"The first 20-25 minutes things were clicking before [Jessica Levy] made a phenomenal save that sparked Delaware," said head coach Greg Paynter. "It was a back-and-forth game. They got one really good opportunity and capitalized."

The second half was more of the same as senior Cheyenne Skidmore and junior Amanda Novy both tested Blue Hen goalie Levy early in the frame. Delaware answered with three shots of its own before Ali Miller and Melissa Pennington connected for the game's only goal at 64:45. She slipped through the Towson defense and chipped the ball past a diving Erin Quinn. Quinn recorded eight saves.

"We fought hard and pushed, even in the last 10 minutes and got a couple of good chances," continued Paynter. "It was good to see Cheyenne and Emily Banes click tonight. I thought our defenders played well and kept Delaware from any easy shots."

Towson returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Drexel at 3 p.m.
