Women's Soccer 9.7.2012

Annapolis, Md. - The Towson University women's soccer team (0-5-1) was edged, 2-1, by the George Washington Colonials (3-2-0) this evening at the Glen Warner Soccer Facility in the opening match of the 2012 Navy Invitational.

"I really thought we played okay tonight," said head coach Greg Paynter. "We needed to protect the ball better. They got a goal in the first half, and then we weren't able to clear. Credit to them, they got two goals and we got one. But I thought we played our best total 90 minutes today."

George Washington took an early 1-0 lead on a header by Adriana Moya in the 17th minute. The Colonials nursed that lead through the rest of the frame and into the break despite offensive pressure from Towson that resulted in five shots and three corner kicks for the Tigers.

"The team is young," noted Paynter. "We are playing close games away from home that are building character and giving these young players valuable experience and a chance to learn what it takes to win. [These close games] will prepare us for the tough match ups we will face in conference play."

Towson knotted the score at 1-1 when senior forward Cheyenne Skidmore controlled a long punt from sophomore goalkeeper Erin Quinn and dribbled through the defense to score at 54:02. But GW's Kristi Abbate received a cross from Alex Neal and scored from the right side at 64:26 to put George Washington ahead for good.

Quinn posted four saves for Towson. The Colonials' Nicole Fasano also made four saves. Towson outshot George Washington 15-14, but the Colonials held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tigers conclude the weekend's play with a match against Navy on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m.
