Northeastern Defeats Tigers, 3-0

TOWSON, Md. – Northeastern University hit .297 with 11 team blocks en route to a 3-0 victory over the Towson University volleyball team on Saturday night in SECU Arena. Junior Saitaua Iosia led the Tigers with 10 kills as the team held its annual Alumnae Night.

Northeastern jumped out to an early lead in the first set as back-to-back kills from Caterina Rosander gave the visitors a 9-4 advantage. Towson battled back as a ball handling error by the Huskies cut the deficit to three, 10-7. The Tigers continued to push for points as junior Casey Giovanazzi had a service ace and the home team trailed by just one, 12-11. The two teams traded points before a kill from Nichole Kurz started a 12-3 run for Northeastern. That stretch allowed the visitors to close out the first set and claim a 25-15 victory.

The Huskies again got out to a quick start in the second set as a block from Rosander and Ava Cramp allowed Northeastern (10-7, 3-1 CAA) to take a 9-3 lead. Northeastern extended its advantage to 17-6 on a kill by Kurz. Towson got back-to-back blocks from freshmen Stephanie Massanet and Lindsay Flaherty, which made it 20-13. Those blocks started a 6-2 run by the Tigers and the score was 22-17 in the set. However, Northeastern scored the final three points of the set to claim a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Towson (6-15, 0-3 CAA) opened up a 3-1 lead to start the third set, on a service ace by Flaherty. Northeastern responded with a 5-0 run to take back a lead they would not relinquish. Two straight kills from Hanna Gibeau extended the Huskies advantage to 15-7. The two teams continued to battle before a block from Alexa Armstrong gave Northeastern a 25-14 set win and victory in the match.

In addition to Iosia's kills, the Tigers got five kills and three blocks from Massanet. Giovanazzi dished out a team-high 12 assists while junior Paige Sekerak posted 11 digs.

Gibeau had a team-high nine kills for Northeastern while Kelly Bacon contributed eight kills and 14 digs. Rosander led the Huskies' blocking game with nine blocks and added eight kills.

Towson returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11 when the Tigers head to James Madison for a 7 p.m. match.
