WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington recorded 13 team blocks en route to a 3-0 victory over the Towson University volleyball team on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Junior Capri Tirrell matched her career-high with 11 digs to lead the Tigers.
The two teams battled early in the first set and found themselves tied at 6-6 following a Seahawk service error. UNC Wilmington responded with a 6-1 run to take a 13-7 lead in the set and forced a Towson timeout. The Seahawks extended their advantage to 19-11 on a kill from Kristen Powell. A kill from Morgan Kline gave the home team a 25-14 first set victory and an early lead in the match.
Back-to-back attack errors by UNC Wilmington allowed the Tigers to take a 10-7 lead early in the second set. A kill from sophomore Kelsey Polak increased the Tiger advantage to 13-10. An attack error by the home team pushed the Tiger lead to 17-11 in the set. Three straight kills from Nicole Lott started a stretch that saw the Seahawks score six unanswered points and tie the set at 17-17. The two sides traded points and found themselves tied at 19-19. Another kill from Lott allowed UNC Wilmington to use a 6-3 run to close out the second set. The Seahawks used a 25-22 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was the closest of the match as the two teams needed extra points to decide the set. A kill from Lott allowed the Seahawks to open up a 10-5 advantage. Towson scored four of the next six points to make it 12-9 in the set. The two teams continued to battle as a kill from junior Saitaua Iosia pulled the Tigers to within one, 16-15. A kill from freshman Lindsay Flaherty tied the set at 19-19. Neither team could take a lead of more than a point over the next couple of serves. A kill from senior Dayane Van Ass and a ball handling error by the Seahawks finally changed that and gave Towson a 25-24 edge. However a kill from Kline and a pair of blocks gave UNC Wilmington a 27-25 set win and victory in the match.
Iosia led the Tigers as she posted her second straight “double-double” and 10th of the year. She finished with 10 kills and 11 digs to lead the visitors. Junior Victoria Williams contributed nine kills and four digs while sophomore Kyana Miller dished out a team-high 19 assists. In addition to Tirrell's 11 digs, junior Paige Sekerak had 17 digs.
