Daytona Beach, Fla. - In just their fourth appearance at the National Cheerleaders
Association's (NCA) Collegiate Cheerleading Championship, Towson University
Cheerleading won the All Girl Division 1 (FCS) category with a score of 92.03 on Friday, April 12 in the Daytona Bandshell.
The Tiger cheerleaders showed they had what
it took in the preliminaries, placing second after deductions. The Tigers received the highest raw score of
their division Day 1 and performed second-to-last in their division at Friday's finals.
Out of 11 Division I universities, only seven made the finals. In
first after Day 1 were the Sam Houston State University Bearkats, who
dropped to second after finals. Morgan
State finished third while Kennesaw State placed fourth.
Towson Cheerleading had a better Day 1 performance but
received 1.5 points in deductions both days.
However, Sam Houston received 2.5 points in deductions, allowing the
Tigers to slip into first place and claim the program's first national championship.
This is a sweet victory for three seniors in the
program. Sam Bauman and Katharine
Stetson as well as captain Kaila Flood were part of the team who captured
fourth in 2010 at their first appearance at NCA College Nationals. The team improved one place every year, finishing third
in 2011 and second in 2012.
Towson Cheerleading received very high marks for its jumps
and standing tumbling and posted the highest stunting score of the
division. Towson received good feed back
on stunt execution and cleanliness. The
Tigers had a bobble in the pyramid but quick thinking by freshman Karlie Damato
helped save the pyramid from a fall and remained a strong mid-layer.
The Towson Cheerleaders believed in their team, had a goal
they believed they could achieve and walked away with the coveted megaphone
trophy and National Champion banner. The
cheerleaders ran into the ocean with their uniforms on, a beloved NCA College
National Champion tradition. The Tigers' finals performance will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, April 28.
