MORNING ROAR: Monday, April 29, 2013

Good morning Tiger Nation and welcome to the Morning Roar.

Let's Unleash the Roar

Saturday was a busy day for Tiger athletics and it all started with @Towson_FB's Tiger Bowl III. But before the players hit the field the seniors attended the “Captains Breakfast” where they got a chance to hear from the alumni that wore the Towson jersey before them. It was very inspirational and I think it hit home with a lot of players. I had a chance to talk to some of the speakers and current senior offensive lineman Randall Harris and Eric Pike.

Then a few hours later the players suited up and hit the field for the final time in the spring and played Tiger Bowl III. To say it was a defensive struggle would be an understatement, Thomas Bradley picked off Connor Fraizer and returned it to the two-yard line, which led to the only score of the game, the Black team defeated the Gold team 7-0. However, there were some nice offensive plays, senior tight end James Oboh looked impressive pulling in five balls for 100 yards including a very nice one-handed grab. The Tigers will open the 2013 season on August 30 when they travel to Storrs, Connecticut to take on the UConn Huskies.

@Towson_SB had a very busy weekend taking on George Mason in a three-game series. The Tigers swept the Patriots in Saturday's doubleheader taking game one 2-1 and game two 7-6. Katie Lingmai dominated in game one only allowing one hit through the first five innings en route to the win. The Tigers completed the series sweep yesterday by taking the game 2-1 on senior day for their 12th straight win. Lingmai pitched another spectacular complete game only surrendering one earned run. The Tigers will close out the regular season this coming weekend when they travel up to Hofstra for a three game series.

@Towson_BASE hosted No. 21 ranked UNC Wilmington all weekend long and dropped game one 10-5, but came out of the gates hot in game two and took the game 9-5. Paul Beers pitched a gem for the Tigers throwing seven innings and only giving up two runs with no walks. Kurt Wertz led the Tigers at the dish in game two going 2-for-3 with three RBI. The Tigers picked up the series win on Sunday when they took the game 8-5. Wertz again led the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and homerun driving in three for the second straight game. The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday when they have a rematch with the University of Maryland, this time in College Park, at 6:30 p.m.

@Towson_MGOLF wrapped up the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament this weekend at the St. James Plantation in South Carolina. The Tigers finished in sixth place with a team score of 929. Joe Gunerman finished in 12th place to lead the Tigers and shot 229 for the tournament with his lowest round of 74 coming on Saturday. UNCW won the event with a team score of 888.

It will be a big weekend for @Towson_TFXC as they will be hosting the CAA Championships inside Johnny Unitas Stadium. The Championships will take place Friday and Saturday as the Tigers will look to defend their turf and bring home the CAA Title. Events on both Friday and Saturday will get underway at 10 a.m. and admission is free so be sure to come out and cheer on the Tigers!

Lax Time

@Towson_MLAX played its final home game of the regular season and defeated St. Joseph's 13-6. The Tigers honored their four seniors before the start of the game, but it was some unfamiliar faces that led the charge for the Tigers. The scoring started off when junior defenseman John Fennessy scored from 65-yards when he saw the Hawks goalie leave the crease. The goal was the first of Fennessy's career, Max Siskind and Chris Vetter also scored their first career goals en route to the win. Greg Cuccinello continued the career firsts by registering his first hat trick and finished with four goals. Andrew Wascavage made 10 second half saves and finished with 12 on senior night. The Tigers will take on Drexel in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Penn State.

@Towson_WLAX now knows who they will play in the first round of the CAA tournament, and just like the men the Tigers take on Drexel in the first round. The Tigers will be hosting the tournament for the third straight year, and for the second straight year the tournament will be played at the Tiger Soccer Complex. The tournament will start with No. 1 seed Tigers taking on the No. 4 seed Drexel on Friday May 3 at 1 p.m. Then at 3:30 No. 2 James Madison will battle No. 3 Hofstra with the winner of each game meeting on Sunday for the championship and to find out who gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
