MORNING ROAR: Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Good morning Tiger Nation and welcome to the Morning Roar.

Let's Unleash the Roar

Let's extend a warm welcome to Eric Hammond who is the newest member of the Towson family. Hammond will serve as an assistant coach for @Towson_VB, it was announced yesterday by head coach Don Metil. Metil and Hammond worked at UMES for the past six years and the two posted a 61-3 record in conference while there. Metil and Hammond inherit a Towson team that went 25-4 overall and had an undefeated run through conference.

Towson University has partnered with the Maryland National Guard for “Operation Guardian Tiger” --which means the university will “adopt” two National Guard units and provide support for deployed soldiers and their families. Towson will work closely with the 200th and 209th Military Police Companies from Parkville, Md. and Catonsville, Md. respectively.  The athletic department will do their part at several events in 2013-14 including hosting the families at select football, basketball and lacrosse games.

As the semester comes to a close, many students and student-athletes are beginning to wrap up finals week. @Towson_MBB's junior forward Marcus Damas talks about how seriously he and his teammates take their studies in the latest offseason check-in.

Tomorrow, @Towson_BASE will open the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament when they take on Northeastern for the fourth straight game. The Tigers enter the tournament as the fourth seed while Northeastern claimed the fifth seed by defeating the Tigers on Sunday. The tournament is double-elimination with the winner of the Towson/Northeastern game taking on top seeded UNC Wilmington.  Fans can watch the games for free on CAA.TV complete with live stats.

Throughout the summer, the “voice” of the Tigers Spiro Morekas will take a look down memory lane. Morekas will highlight the memorable comebacks that he has broadcasted over his 22 years of calling Towson games, in his blog From the Broadcast Booth. In his first entry Morekas looks back to last year when @Towson_MLAX was down 9-3 in the fourth quarter to Hofstra and fought back to force double-overtime and eventually a 10-9 win on the road against the than 20th ranked team in the country. After reading Morekas recap his view of the win, I can't wait for the next post.

Speaking of @Towson_MLAX, over the weekend the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) game between the Ohio Machine and the New York Lizards had many Towson ties. Assistant coach Dan Cocchi plays for the Lizards while volunteer coach Chad Wiedmaier and Will Harrington ('10) play for the Machine. In the end Cocchi and the Lizards got the last laugh by taking down the Machine 14-8.
