BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior Victoria Williams contributed a team-high 13 kills but it was not enough as the Towson University volleyball team fell to UMBC, 3-0 on Tuesday night in Baltimore, Md.
The two squads battled through eight ties early before UMBC scored three straight points to take a 17-14 lead. A kill from sophomore Candace Steadman started a 4-0 Tiger run which gave the visitors an 18-17 edge. The two teams continued to trade points before a service ace from Williams put Towson (3-6) on top 24-21. However, UMBC (4-4) was not done as the Retrievers scored four straight points and six of the next seven to capture the set, 27-25.
In the second set, back-to-back service aces from Mallory McIntyre gave UMBC a 10-5 lead. The Retrievers pushed their lead to 19-14 on a kill from McIntyre. UMBC eventually claimed a 25-18 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match. A kill from Ali Goc gave the Retrievers a 12-9 lead in the third set. The home team extended their advantage to 17-11 on an ace from McIntyre. UMBC earned a 25-16 win in the third set to claim the 3-0 victory in the match.
Williams added four digs in addition to her team-high in kills. Sophomore Kelsey Polak dished out 24 assists to go with three service aces while junior Saitaua Iosia contributed eight kills and five digs.
Goc and Hannah Schmidt led UMBC with eight kills each while McIntyre had 31 assists and five service aces. Casey Griffith had a team-high eight digs in the match.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, September 13 when the New Mexico Tournament beings. The Tigers face the host Lobos at 9 p.m. (EST).
