TOWSON, Md. - Towson University's Department of Athletics has released the latest installment of its 2013-14 Points of Pride. The Points of Pride have been designed to highlight and represent the best of Tiger Athletics and will be updated on a monthly basis.
Community Service:
• The Tiger football team spent some time on January 3 with the special needs football players of the Miracle League of Frisco, Texas.
Football:
• Junior running back Terrance West finished third in the voting for the Walter Payton Award. He finished the season with an NCAA FCS record 2,509 yards on 413 carries. He also set NCAA FCS records with 41 rushing touchdowns and 42 touchdowns scored. West was was named as the winner of the first Division I Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Running Back of the Year award.
• The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) selected Towson as the 2013 ECAC Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Team of the Year. The Tigers finished the season with a school-record 13 victories and advanced to the FCS National Championship game.
• Towson was also named as the unanimous winner of the Lambert Meadowlands Award presented to the top FCS team in the East.
• West and senior tackle Eric Pike were named as All-America first team selections on the FCS All-America team that was selected by The Sports Network. They were two of five Tigers named to The Sports Network's three All-America teams. Sophomore fullback Emmanuel Holder and senior cornerback Jordan Love were named to the second team while senior linebacker Telvion Clark earned third team honors.
• Pike, West, senior tackle Randall Harris, senior linebacker Telvion Clark, senior cornerback Jordan Love and junior defensive end Ryan Delaire were also named to the All-ECAC FCS team.
• Pike and West were also named to the Walter Camp 2013 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America team and as members of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Coaches' All-America Team.
Men's Golf:
• Tiger standout Juan Veloza was selected as the league's 'Freshman to Watch', according to Golfweek Magazine. The rookie posted a team-leading 73.2 scoring average in six fall events.
Men's Lacrosse
• Inside Lacrosse picked Towson to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and named JoJo Ostrander, Thomas DeNapoli and John Fennessy preseason All-CAA.
• DeNapoli was selected 15th overall by the Charlotte Hounds in the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft on January 10.
Men's Swimming and Diving:
• With the Tigers' victory over George Mason last weekend, the Tigers have won nine meets in a season for the first time since 2003-04.
• Senior diver Alex Cohen was awarded CAA Men's Diver of the Week on January 14 after he broke his own Towson school record in the one-meter dive by scoring 308.85 points on Saturday in a win over George Mason. He also shattered his own school record in the three-meter event with a 339.83 score. The scores enabled Cohen to win both events. He has received the award five times this season.
Women's Basketball:
• Senior guard Tanisha McTiller was named theCAA Co-Player of the Week on Monday by league officials. McTiller averaged 23 points and eight rebounds per game in a pair of victories as the Tigers opened CAA play with wins over Hofstra and Northeastern.
