ELON, N.C. – The Towson University volleyball team rallied for a fourth set win and a 3-1 victory at Elon University in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Thursday night. The Tigers (18-3, 5-2 CAA) ran their win streak to four straight behind a match-high 19 kills from senior
Saitaua Iosia.
Elon (5-17, 0-6 CAA) opened up a 12-9 lead in the first set following a ball handling error by the Tigers. Towson responded with four straight points and took a 13-12 advantage. That streak was capped by a service ace from senior
Paige Sekerak. The two teams traded points as a kill from
Ally Karle allowed the Phoenix to tie the set at 19-19. Towson scored five of the next seven points to take a 24-21 lead in the set. Senior
Victoria Williams had a pair of kills for the Tigers during that stretch. Elon got a kill from
Catherine Head before a ball handling error by the Phoenix gave Towson a 25-22 set win.
Towson took a 10-5 lead to start the second set on a kill from Iosia. Another service ace from Sekerak pushed the visitors' advantage to 12-5. A kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman allowed the visitors to take a 17-9 advantage. The two teams battled before four straight points from Elon pulled the home team to within four, 18-14. Following a Towson timeout, the Tigers used a 7-4 run to close out a 25-18 set victory and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Elon hit .370 to the Tigers' .281 in the third set. With the set tied at 6-6, the Phoenix used a 6-2 run to take a 12-8 lead.
Sydney Busa capped the run with a service ace. Towson pulled to within one, 14-13 on an Elon service error.
Megan Gravley's kill pushed the home team's advantage to 19-15. Trailing 21-19, the Tigers got back-to-back kills from Iosia to tie the set at 21-21. The Tigers and Phoenix traded points and were tied at 24-24 on a kill from Iosia. A kill from Busa and an attack error by the Tigers gave Elon a 26-24 set win and forced the match to a fourth set.
The Phoenix looked to carry their momentum into the fourth set as they took a 13-5 lead on a ball handling error by the Tigers. Towson trailed 15-6 before a 5-0 run pulled the Tigers to within five, 15-11. Junior
Haley Pa'akaula had a pair of kills during that stretch. Elon pushed its lead to 18-14 on a kill from Head. A 5-1 run from the visitors tied the set at 19-19. Iosia had a block and a kill during that scoring spurt. The two teams went back and forth as a kill from sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty tied the set at 23-23. Gravley put Elon on top 24-23 with a kill. A pair of kills from Williams sandwiched around an attack error by Elon gave Towson a 26-24 win and victory in the match.
Iosia hit .447 in the match and contributed five digs to go with her 19 kills. Williams had 17 kills and two blocks while redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert dished out 29 assists. Freshman
Barbara Lopez split setting duties with Schubert and had 22 assists. Sekerak had 15 digs and three service aces.
Karle led Elon with 17 kills and four blocks while Busa and Gravley each contributed 12 kills.
Towson is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when it travels to UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. match. The Seahawks fell to Delaware on Thursday night.
