BOX SCORE NEWARK, Del. - Senior
Katie Ponce scored in the 69th minute to lead the Towson women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Delaware Friday evening in Newark, Delaware.
"We fought, that's for sure," said Head Coach
Greg Paynter. "We fought hard. We defended very well. We played a new system for us, a 3-4-3. Our kids did a fantastic job playing with heart. It was certainly an earned win. A lot of credit goes to [assistant coaches] Erica [Marshall] and Mike [Eckberg] to come up with this game plan and accentuate our strengths.
Erin Quinn really stepped up and was huge tonight and really showed why she is one of the best goalkeepers in the region. The efforts Nikki had as a wide midfielder was tremendous. I'm very proud of what [the team] did [tonight]."
The Tigers (4-8-3, 1-4-1 CAA) and the Blue Hens (6-8-1, 2-3-1 CAA) played to a scoreless draw in the first half, with Delaware outshooting Towson, 6-1. But the Tigers came out of the break recharged offensively. At 68:08, Ponce received a pass from freshman
Gabby Scirica just five yards from goal. She chipped it over the goalkeeper's head for the game-winning goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Erin Quinn made six saves for Towson for her sixth shutout of the season. She now has eight career clean sheets. One more will move her into a tie for fourth place all-time at Towson with Yasmin Alter '03 and Megan Lumsden '97.
