TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team ran its current win streak to eight straight matches with a 3-0 victory over Northeastern University on Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Tigers (22-3, 8-2 CAA) remained undefeated at home this season with the victory (11-0).
A pair of service aces from senior
Saitaua Iosia helped the Tigers open up a 7-1 lead in the first set. Northeastern (10-15, 2-9 CAA) responded with an 8-2 run of its own which tied the set at 9-9. The two teams battled for every point as they fought through seven ties and found themselves tied at 18-18. Towson scored three straight points and took a 21-18 advantage in the set. Junior
Haley Pa'akaula had a kill and a block assist during that stretch. The Tigers pushed their lead to 22-20 on a kill from Iosia. Northeastern scored three of the next four points and tied the set at 23-23.
Caterina Rosander had a pair of kills during that run. Towson used kills from Iosia and sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty to close out a 25-23 set win.
Iosia led the Tigers with seven first set kills while freshman
Barbara Lopez dished out eight assists.
The two teams battled early in the second set and found themselves tied at 11-11 on a kill from senior
Victoria Williams. The Huskies scored five of the next seven points and took a 16-13 lead. A pair of attack errors by Northeastern and a kill from Iosia allowed the home team to tie the set at 16-16. The two teams traded points before back-to-back kills from Williams gave Towson a 21-19 advantage. A kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman allowed Towson to claim a 25-22 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Williams had six kills in the second set and hit .857 for the Tigers.
The third set proved to be another tightly contested one as the two teams battled through 10 ties and three lead changes. Northeastern took leads of 10-8 and 15-12 before the Tigers fought back. A 6-2 run by Towson put the Tigers on top 18-17. Iosia had three kills during that stretch for the Tigers. The two teams traded points and found themselves tied at 22-22 on a kill by
Kristen Walding. Towson scored three of the next four points for the 25-23 set win and victory in the match.
Iosia had seven kills in the third set and finished with a match-high 21 kills. She added 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Williams contributed 13 kills while hitting .632 in the contest. Pa'akaula posted nine kills and 11 digs while Lopez dished out 24 assists with seven digs. Senior
Paige Sekerak had 12 digs and seven assists.
Brigitte Burcescu led Northeastern with eight kills while Rosander had seven kills and three blocks.
Towson is back in action on Friday, Oct. 31 when it hosts first-place Hofstra in SECU Arena at 7 p.m. The Pride earned a 3-1 win when the two squads met in early October in Hempstead.
