BOSTON, Mass. – Senior
Paige Sekerak set the career digs record while leading the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Northeastern University on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Sekerak's 16 digs gave her 1,627 for her career which broke
Stacy Humphries' school record.
The Tigers snapped a two-match losing streak with the victory.
"We did a good job of adjusting our original game plan and then executing in follow thru," said Towson Head Coach
Don Metil. "Our block did a good job attending to the Northeastern top attackers and forcing them into their second and third shot choices.
"Paige did a great job all weekend and it's a fantastic honor for her to break the all-time dig record at Towson," remarked Metil. "It's equally an honor to be coaching a great libero, captain and role model for our program. She's valued way beyond her dig total."
Trailing 4-3 in the first set Towson (15-3, 2-2 CAA) used a 5-2 run to take an 8-6 advantage. Senior
Victoria Williams had a pair of kills during that stretch for the Tigers. A pair of attack errors by Northeastern (8-9, 1-3 CAA) allowed the Tigers to extend their advantage to 15-9. Another kill from Williams gave the visitors an 18-13 lead in the set. The two teams battled before back-to-back kills from senior
Saitaua Iosia gave Towson a 25-20 first set win.
Iosia finished the first set with eight kills while the Tigers hit .406 to Northeastern's .038.
The second set saw Northeastern open up a 12-6 lead on back-to-back attack errors by the Tigers. A kill from
Brigitte Burcescu extended the Huskies' advantage to 18-11. The Tigers pulled to within four, 19-15 on a kill from Iosia. The two teams battled before an attack error by the Tigers gave Northeastern a 25-19 set win and tied the match at 1-1.
Sekerak had seven digs in the set and her fifth gave her 1,618 digs for her career breaking Humphries' mark. Northeastern hit .314 in the set while holding the Tigers to a .167 mark.
An 8-3 run in the third allowed the Tigers to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 10-6 advantage. Williams and sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty each had a solo block and a block assist during that stretch. Towson pushed its lead to 14-8 on a block from Flaherty and Iosia and forced a Northeastern timeout. A pair of kills from Williams and a block from Williams and Flaherty put Towson ahead 17-8 and forced the Huskies to take their second timeout. A kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman made it 21-12 in favor of the Tigers. A block from Flaherty and Iosia closed out a 25-18 set win for the Tigers and gave Towson a 2-1 lead in the match.
Flaherty had five blocks in the set to lead a Tiger squad that collected six team blocks just in the third set.
A service ace from Flaherty allowed Towson to open up a 6-2 advantage in the fourth set. Northeastern pulled to within one, 7-6 on a service ace from
Ashlee Asada. The Tigers responded with a 4-1 run to push their lead to 11-7. Junior
Haley Pa'akaula had a kill and a service ace during that stretch. A block from Williams and Steadman made it 16-12 in favor of the Tigers. A kill from Flaherty pushed the Towson lead 22-16. Kills from Iosia and Pa'akaula closed out a 25-18 fourth set win for the Tigers and victory in the match.
Iosia paced the Tiger offense with 20 kills and seven digs in the match. Williams contributed 14 kills and six blocks while Flaherty had seven kills and seven blocks. Redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert posted the "double-double" with 26 assists and 10 digs. Sekerak added four assists to go with her 16 digs. Towson hit .306 in the match and recorded 12 team blocks.
Jamie Bredahl had 11 kills and 11 digs to lead Northeastern.
Kristen Walding dished out 38 assists while
Natalia Skibia had 12 digs.
Towson returns home to host James Madison on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
