TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 win over Elon University on Saturday night in SECU Arena. The Tigers (27-4, 13-3 CAA), who recognized their six seniors prior to the match, won their fourth straight match.
"Definitely, it was nice to get the win and to begin the match with five of our six seniors having the chance to start," said Towson Head Coach
Don Metil. "It was also great to get
Breana Harris in at the end of the match, she hasn't had many chances this year and she performed well."
With the two squads tied at 10-10, Towson used a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead which forced the Phoenix to call timeout. That run was jumpstarted by a kill from Harris and also included a pair of kills from senior
Victoria Williams. Towson extended its lead to 19-15 on a kill from sophomore
Taylor Huewe. A block from Harris put the Tigers ahead 21-17 and forced Elon to call its second timeout. Williams closed out a 25-18 first set win for the Tigers with her fourth kill of the set.
In addition to Williams' four kills, senior
Paige Sekerak had nine digs in the set.
A block from
Catherine Head and
Chanelle Smith allowed Elon (6-26, 1-115 CAA) to open up a 14-8 lead in the second set. The two teams continued to battle as the Phoenix extended their lead to 18-14 on a kill from Smith and Towson was forced to call timeout. Towson responded by scoring eight of the next 12 points and tied the set at 22-22. Sekerak had a pair of kills for the Tigers during that run. However, a service error by the Tigers gave Elon its 23
rd point of the set. The Phoenix followed that up with a service ace and a block from Head and
Ally Karle to secure a 25-22 set win.
Sydney Busa's five kills in the set allowed the Phoenix to tie the match at 1-1.
A service ace from senior
Saitaua Iosia gave Towson an 11-8 edge in the third set. The two teams traded points before a 7-3 run allowed the Tigers to push their lead to 18-13. The two squads continued to battle before a service ace from redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert gave the home team a 22-14 advantage. A kill from Williams secured a 25-19 third set win and a 2-1 Tiger lead in the match.
Williams finished with seven kills in the set for the Tigers.
Towson opened up a 9-6 lead in the fourth set on a kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman. The Tigers pushed their lead to 15-8 on a kill from Iosia. The two teams went back-and-forth before a kill from sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty gave Towson a 19-14 lead. The two teams continued to fight for each point before an attack error from the Phoenix gave Towson a 25-19 set win and victory in the match.
Flaherty had three kills in the set while Sekerak collected seven digs.
Williams led all players with 18 kills, three digs and a block. Iosia posted 10 kills, eight digs and two service aces for the Tigers. Schubert recorded her second straight double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs while Sekerak contributed 24 digs. Seniors
Aniris Fernandez and
Capri Tirrell had 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Busa led Elon with 13 kills while Smith finished with five kills, six digs and three blocks.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 21 when Towson begins play in the CAA Championship. The championship will be hosted by the College of Charleston, who is the league's top seed. The Tigers' first opponent will be announced tomorrow with the completion of the CAA regular season.
