BOX SCORE MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Alabama handed the Towson University volleyball team its first loss of the season with a 3-0 victory to wrap up the Alabama State Tournament. Towson got 16 kills from
Saitaua Iosia and is now 9-1 on the season.
A block from
Kat Hutson and
Leah Lawrence gave Alabama a 12-8 lead in the first set. A pair of kills from Iosia cut the Tiger deficit to 16-13. However, a service error from the Tigers put Alabama ahead 20-16. An attack error by the Tigers gave Alabama a 25-20 first set victory.
The two squads battled through a several ties early as the set was tied at 7-7. Alabama went on top 13-10 on a block by
Brittany Thomas. Alabama pushed its advantage to 17-11 on another kill from Thomas. The two teams continued to battle before a kill from Thomas closed out a 25-21 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
A service ace from
Krystal Rivers gave Alabama a 10-5 lead in the third set. Back-to-back kills and a service ace from Iosia cut the Tiger deficit to 13-10. However a
Natalie Murison service ace made it from 15-10 in favor of Alabama. A block from Thomas gave Alabama a 20-16 lead. Back-to-back kills from Iosia cut the Towson deficit to 22-20. However Alabama called timeout and closed the set on a 3-1 run to secure the 25-21 set victory and a 3-0 win in the match.
Iosia added nine digs to go with her team-high in kills.
Victoria Williams added 14 kills while
Haley Pa'akaula contributed 10 kills and 11 digs for the "double-double."
Aimee Schubert had 18 assists while
Paige Sekerak posted 12 digs.
Hutson led Alabama with 12 kills while
Sierra Wilson dished out 32 assists.
Towson is back in action when it returns home to host Delaware State on Wednesday, September 17 at 7 p.m.
