Read, Pinkney Lead Towson to 2-0 Win Over UMBC

BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. – Behind goals from senior Sofia Read and sophomore Natalia Pinkney, the Towson women's soccer team defeated UMBC, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in the conclusion of the 2014 Battle of Baltimore. Towson (3-4-1) finished second in the tournament.

"One of our assistants, Mike Eckberg, really challenged the team to see if they had the courage to respond after a disappointing result on Friday," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "They really came out hard and smart, and I think that was some of the most creative attacking soccer we've played in a while."

Towson made several forays into the UMBC defensive end at the start of the game, and in the fifth minute, Pinkney served a long forward ball to Read whose shot beat the UMBC goalkeeper low to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. Pinkney put herself on the scoreboard 10 minutes later when she streaked down the left side and scored unassisted to give Towson a 2-0 lead.

Towson continued to dominate the rest of the first half and held their advantage through to halftime.

"We were able to get a fast start," continued Paynter. "In the second half, UMBC put us under some pressure, but they had to take the game to us, because we had the early lead."

UMBC came out of the break with more energy and was able to sustain some pressure on offense. However, the Retrievers' shots weren't too much trouble for senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn.

The Tigers outshot UMBC 18-8 and forced Retriever goalkeeper Jen Nance to make a career-best 10 saves.

The all-tournament team included Kelsey Taragona, Kelly Santangelo, Morgan Crable, and Maddie Boccio from Loyola (Md.); Kristyn Hubbard, Pinkney and Nicole Nicholas from Towson; Paige Preston and Lilly Rydon from UMBC and Cia Makrigiorgos and Nicole Vallely from Mount St. Mary's.

Next week, Towson plays one match, at Villanova on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.
