BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team battled for a 3-0 win over North Dakota State on Friday evening in SECU Arena as part of the Tiger Invitational. Senior
Victoria Williams had a match-high 11 kills as the Tigers won their third straight match and improved to 12-1 on the year.
"It's a good win, North Dakota State was one of the scrappiest teams we've seen," said Tiger Head Coach
Don Metil. "They are one of the most defensively sound team, in terms of keeping the ball in play, we saw all year but it's a really good win for us. The support tonight from the crowd was awesome and we were glad to get revenge for the whole Towson community against NDSU."
There were eight ties early in the first set. Towson used a 4-0 run to break a 10-10 tie and take a lead it would not relinquish. A kill from sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty extended the Tiger advantage to 16-14. Senior
Saitaua Iosia had a kill to push the Towson lead to 19-15. Three straight points, including a pair of kills from
Emily Miron pulled the Bison to within one, 19-18. An attack error by North Dakota State, a kill from Williams and a service ace from redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert gave Towson a 22-18 lead. The two teams continued to battle before a kill from Williams closed out a 25-21 set victory for Towson.
Williams had five kills in the set while senior
Paige Sekerak recorded 11 digs.
The second set was the most tightly contested of the match as the two squads battled through 11 ties and five lead changes. Towson took a 7-5 lead before North Dakota State (4-8) battled back to go on top 9-7 behind an
Emily Minnick kill. The Tigers and Bison continued to trade points as back-to-back blocks from Flaherty gave Towson a 16-13 lead. However, the Bison took an 18-16 advantage on a Minnick kill. Tied at 19-19, Towson used a block from Flaherty and a kill from Iosia to go on top 21-19. A service ace from Flaherty gave the Tigers a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Flaherty had four blocks and a service ace in the set.
The Tigers came out firing to start the third set as a service ace from Iosia gave the home team a 6-2 lead. Towson pushed its advantage to 10-5 on a kill from Flaherty. Leading 10-6, Towson used a 10-1 run to push its advantage to 20-7. Highlighting that run by the Tigers was a pair of blocks from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman and two kills and a block from Iosia. The two teams traded points before a block from junior
Haley Pa'akaula and Flaherty sealed a 25-11 set win and victory in the match.
Williams led the Tigers with four kills and a block in the final set.
Williams added three digs and a block in addition to her match-high 11 kills. Schubert recorded the "double-double" with 14 assists and 11 digs. Flaherty contributed four kills and five blocks while Sekerak tallied a season-high 17 digs.
Miron had a team-high eight kills for North Dakota State while
Brianna Rasmusson contributed 14 assists and 11 digs.
Towson wraps up the Tiger Invitational when it hosts St. John's on Saturday at 2 p.m.
